Philosophy

As an art educator, I emphasize creative problem-solving & interdisciplinary practices, affirm making as a way of thinking, and advocate for the artist’s role in social justice and community engagement. I facilitate active, intrinsically-motivated learning by giving students a voice and choice in my classroom. I honor students’ autonomy and provide substantial time for ideation and iterative design.

I consider myself a creative-thinking & critical-thinking skills teacher -- I structure my curriculum around brief skill- or concept-based lessons, then guide students through open-ended, self-directed projects incorporating those skills, concepts, or media. My role becomes that of a coach, assisting students in persisting through challenges, recognizing growth, and celebrating mastery.

In my classroom, students explore the “why” behind art, not just the how. From deeply personal expression, to raising awareness, to questioning & learning about the world, students understand not only what art is, but what it is for.

I take time to get to know my students as individuals and build relationships with each, creating a safe space to experiment, take risks, and make mistakes. By connecting art with other disciplines, I create opportunities for my students to transfer skills to life beyond the classroom walls; I help students think critically and independently, so they can audaciously create the lives they want.
